The 20th of Safar

Arbaeen: The Greatest Gathering of the Lovers of Truth

Arbaeen, the twentieth day of Safar, marks the fortieth day after the martyrdom of Abu Abdullah al-Hussain  (AS) and his loyal companions on the plains of Karbala. In the history of Islam, this day commemorates the return of the caravan of Ahl al-Bayt (AS) captives from Syria to Karbala, as well as the pilgrimage of Jabir ibn Abdullah al-Ansari—the first pilgrim of Arbaeen—to the blessed grave of Imam Hussain  (AS).

Arbaeen is not merely a remembrance of martyrdom and sorrow; it is a renewal of the covenant with truth and a preservation of the eternal message of Ashura—a message that rose from pure blood to awaken the conscience of humankind forever.

Arbaeen is a manifestation of the boundless love and mercy of Imam Hussain  (AS), a love that calls all human beings regardless of borders, language, race, or belief. As stated in the Arbaeen Ziyarat:

«فَبَذَلَ مُهْجَتَهُ فِیکَ لِیَسْتَنْقِذَ عِبَادَکَ مِنَ الْجَهَالَةِ وَ حَیْرَةِ الضَّلَالَةِ»

Meaning: “He offered his very life in Your cause so that he might save Your servants from ignorance and the bewilderment of misguidance.”

Here, “bazl al-muhjah” does not simply mean the shedding of blood; it signifies sacrificing one’s entire being—one’s feelings, compassion, and existence—for the guidance of humanity. Even in his final moments, Imam Hussain  (AS) never ceased calling people to truth and to God. This sacrifice is the perfect manifestation of divine love: a love that, without expectation, opens the path to human liberation.

But Arbaeen is not only a remembrance of that sacrifice; today, it lives on as the greatest annual pilgrimage on earth. Millions of pilgrims from around the world walk from Najaf to Karbala—approximately 80 kilometers—with hearts full of devotion. Every step is a whisper of “Labbayka ya Hussain ”—a declaration of loyalty to the cause of freedom and justice. This pilgrimage is a display of unity, faith, and universal love for the Ahl al-Bayt (AS), a clear testimony that the blood of Hussain  (AS) still flows in the veins of the ummah.

The Arbaeen journey is a path from love toward the dawn of salvation. With every step, the pilgrims proclaim that they continue the path of sacrifice and justice, awaiting the Promised Savior who will fill the world with the very message of Hussain  (AS)—the message of love, patience, and justice.

Arbaeen is a rehearsal for the appearance of the Savior—a renewed covenant with the Imam who sacrificed his life so that truth might endure. Today, every tear shed for Hussain  (AS) and every step taken toward Karbala is a promise of that radiant morning when the world will be illuminated by the light of Mahdavi justice.
