OHS and Healthcare
We are a group of specialist and super-specialist physicians. Around 2001, we got to know each other when we were admitted to medical university. We loved medicine and, alongside it, shared a concern for religiosity and adherence to religious values. The words of the Supreme Leader about the necessity of religious insight guided us.
In addition to medical studies, we diligently pursued religious and epistemic studies and attended wisdom classes. Medicine was important to us, but gaining knowledge was even more crucial. Wisdom deepened our perspective and helped us avoid a one-eyed view of contemporary science.
The journey was both sweet and challenging! Nourishing our souls with religious and philosophical sciences cultivated other talents within us besides medicine and changed our outlook on existence and medicine. We read wisdom and learned medicine based on contemporary science, and the advancements in medicine, which once amazed us, took on a new color.
Every day, along with enjoying the benefits of medical science, we also met its limitations and sometimes side effects, including:
- Proliferation of specializations
- Tool-centered approaches
- A one-sided view of humans and their needs
- Patient confusion
- High-risk treatments and sometimes no clinical response
- Misdiagnoses
- Excessive use of chemical drugs
We were immersed in the plurality and dichotomies of the medical world. We witnessed the fundamentally Western basis of medicine and its purely physical orientation. Our truth-seeking and perfection-aspiring souls could not accept such deficiencies in current medical science, and many fundamental questions arose, awaiting answers.
Fundamental questions required fundamental answers, and extensive inquiries revealed only one guiding principle in two forms: the Quran and the Infallibles' narrations.
On this basis, we initiated research to delve into the core principles of the Prophet's message and to explore the deeper layers of existence with profound contemplation.
The Holy Prophet said, "I leave among you two weighty things: the Book of Allah and my progeny, my Ahl-al-Bayt. If you adhere to them, you will never go astray, and they will not be separated until they return to me at the Pond (of Kawthar)."
To start this research, the following topics seemed essential:
- Examining the process of human and existential creation and its essence.
- Exploring the higher levels of human existence.
- Investigating the relationship between the body and the higher levels of human existence
- Studying the factors affecting the health of the human soul.
- Revisiting the history of medicine.
- Establishing the foundations of epistemic medicine.
Currently, we have divided into working groups, each responsible for a specific research topic. The results of these studies have mainly led to a shift in perspective: transforming superficial views into deep insights, prioritizing the higher levels of existence, and perceiving the body within this hierarchy. We understood the relationship between higher and lower levels of existence and the concept of "He is exalted in His proximity and near in His loftiness."
In our studies, we realized that comprehensive medicine according to this view can be defined, which we have termed epistemic medicine.
Learning modern medicine involves studying Western sources and clinical experiences based on those sources. In contrast, epistemic medicine entails studying Western medical sources, understanding wisdom, and uncovering intuitive knowledge in medical practice. Epistemic physicians do not possess conventional knowledge (although they understand wisdom and perform their duties); they do not know or learn unless the All-Knowing (Allah) shows them. When revealed, they do not become knowledgeable but rather witness the All-Knowing.
Modern medicine aims to treat diseases, whereas epistemic medicine seeks to heal the patient to manifest the higher levels of human existence. The guide in modern medicine is a graduate of Western and humanistic schools, while, in epistemic medicine, it is the Quran and the Infallibles' teachings. An epistemic physician, in the peak of their need, is dependent on the All-Healing, whereas a modern doctor, relying on their abilities and material tools, seeks to assist patients.
We are now at the start of our journey; however, we are proud and grateful to Allah, as we have not been content with the current less-than-ideal conditions: we quest for better conditions, have clung to the firm rope of Allah, and do not shy away from effort and perseverance.
