Understanding the spiritual heart begins with awareness. Without it, I cannot recognize my true homeland. Before my gender was determined, I existed—with Allah. I can organize my life through awareness by understanding my connection to Allah. Is this awareness in my mind or body? How does it shape my life’s purpose?
The heart is the starting point from which we should begin our journey. Our heart is what we refer to with the pronoun “I.” It is the heart to which we attribute all our actions: I ate, I slept, I drank, I spoke.
What is this “I”? This “I” is our heart. Do we mean the physical heart that beats in our chest? The heart produces blood for all the body’s organs to function. Our physical heart ages and dies. Our spiritual heart, i.e., our very being and existence, does not age or die because it is connected to Allah; thus, I think that when I speak, my lips move, but it is my spiritual heart that is speaking. My heart is a window that shows Allah. If this heart manages the body’s blood supply, my spiritual heart shapes my eternal identity. Therefore, the most crucial task is to become acquainted with the spiritual heart.
