Birth of the Martyr of Truth: Manifestation of Light in Shaʿban
All praise is due to Allah, who created Imam Hussain (ʿa) and made us among his devotees.
This is the month of Shaʿban—a month in which the light of Allah manifested on earth through the visage of Aba Abdullah al-Hussain (ʿa). It is the month of the birth of a radiant sun whose warmth continues to illuminate the hearts of the devoted. In the supplication for the birth anniversary of Imam Hussain (ʿa), we recite:
“O Allah! I ask You by the right of the one born on this day, whose martyrdom was foretold even before his birth …”
Imam Hussain (ʿa) witnessed his martyrdom in the intuitive realm long before it occurred on earth. He was not only the martyr of Karbala, but also the martyr of the path of witnesses and Truth. Hussain (ʿa) perceived this truth within his very essence—a truth that transcends the physical and temporal. He had attained a station of witnessing where he saw the reality of his existence illuminated by Divine light—a vision not of the eyes but of the heart, a profound experience of truth.
This very witnessing shaped his life’s path, inspiring a movement that would forever serve as a source of guidance, inspiration, and intercession for all humanity.
Today, under the luminous shadow of the birth of Imam Hussain (ʿa), we also seek our spiritual Eidiyya (gift) from Allah. May the Eidiyya be the opportunity to witness the radiant station of that martyr, for until we witness this station, we will not truly understand the essence of martyrdom. Without witnessing (shuhūd), faith is merely the repetition of words, and prayer is only a lifeless murmur. However, when we witness the truth and feel it in our souls, every word arises from the depths of our being, and every action carries the color of certainty (yaqīn).
The month of Shaʿban is a time for blossoming the flowers of knowledge and the awakening of hearts. We should make the most of this month to rouse our souls from the slumber of negligence and seek the path of witnessing the Truth.
