The 1st of Muharram
Muharram: The Month that Awakens Hearts
The first of Muharram marks the beginning of the lunar year and reminds us of the month that forever transformed the history of Islam. Muharram is the month in which, on its tenth day, Imam Hussain (peace be upon him), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), was martyred in the desert of Karbala along with his loyal companions, as they stood in defense of truth and justice. For this reason, Muharram is not only a month of mourning, but also a month that awakens the conscience and revives the innate nature of human beings.
With the arrival of Muharram, each day of its first ten days is honored in the name and memory of one of the martyrs of Karbala—a ten-day period during which the remembrance of Imam Hussain (peace be upon him) and his faithful companions is kept alive in the hearts.
During Muharram, hearts are instinctively drawn toward something that the outward mind may not fully grasp. Yet, the hearts familiar with the name of Imam Hussain (peace be upon him) know that these days are unlike any others, because Imam Hussain (peace be upon him) is not merely an Imam or a martyr. He is the eternal symbol of freedom, courage, and profound love for truth.
The name and remembrance of Imam Hussain (peace be upon him) must remain alive, because this remembrance awakens the human heart. Mourning ceremonies, visitations, and tears all exist so that a person’s emotions are directed toward the right path—emotions which, when combined with understanding and proper orientation, can elevate a human being to the highest peaks of spiritual insight.
Imam Hussain (peace be upon him) speaks to the deepest dimensions of the human being: our emotions. When these emotions are awakened, the gate of love opens—a love that transcends reason and frees a person from selfishness and heedlessness.
Being a lover of Imam Hussain (peace be upon him) means recognizing his rightful place and directing one’s love toward his path. Whoever aligns their love with Imam Hussain (peace be upon him) attains a clear spiritual victory—an inner opening that is not achieved through complex intellectual effort, but through the path of love itself.
In this month, let us practice being lovers of Imam Hussain (peace be upon him), not only through tears, but by awakening the heart, taking a stand for truth, and cleansing our hearts from worldly attachments. Perhaps the only condition for boarding the ship of salvation is this: to be a lover of Imam Hussain.
