The 9th of Muharram

Tasua: A Lesson in Steadfastness and Love for Guardianship

The ninth day of Muharram, known in Islamic history as Tasua, is dedicated to honoring Hazrat Abbas ibn Ali (AS), the loyal standard-bearer. Although he was martyred on the day of Ashura, Tasua carries his name so that the hearts of the faithful may be spiritually prepared to understand the profound meaning of Ashura.

In the month of Muharram, in the year 61 AH, the army of Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad, sent by the Umayyad government to suppress the uprising of Imam Hussain (AS), blocked access to the waters of the Euphrates River, imposing severe thirst on the Imam’s camp and his loyal companions.

On the day of Ashura, the enemy prepared for the final attack, and the atmosphere in Karbala became extremely tense. At that critical moment, Hazrat Abbas (AS), the loyal brother of Imam Hussain (AS), the standard-bearer of the army, and the symbol of honor and faith, was assigned to bring water to the tents.

Standing bravely before the enemy forces, he sacrificed his life to protect the dignity of the Ahl al-Bayt and to provide water for the children.

Tasua is, above all, a reminder of Hazrat Abbas (AS), the man who chose love for the guardian of God over all worldly interests. He is the symbol of loyalty, courage, and sacrifice on the path of truth. On a day when many opted for silence and compromise, Hazrat Abbas (AS) chose the path of dignity—a dignity found in following the Imam, not in outward power or personal safety.

Hazrat Abbas (AS) stood firm against the letters of amnesty sent by the enemy. He could have saved himself by accepting those offers, but he chose loyalty to Imam Hussain (AS) and the truth over comfort and safety. This steadfastness made him a symbol of true honor, an honor that springs from within and finds its meaning through faith, love, and insight.

On Tasua, Hazrat Abbas (AS) becomes a model of a human whose heart is alive with love for the Imam—someone who unites reason and emotion on the path of loyalty. Tasua reminds us that true loyalty is not merely in words; it is proven through difficult choices and in standing firm on one’s commitments.

On this day, let us look at ourselves in the mirror of Hazrat Abbas (AS) and learn that true honor lies in loyalty to the truth and standing firm against falsehood. Tasua is an opportunity to awaken the heart—to understand that real dignity is not found in outward victory, but in sacrifice and sincere love for the path of truth.
